The Phyllis J. Washington College of Education has grown by 35,000 vibrant, dynamic and flexible square feet. Opened to students in fall 2019, the College’s new wing provides additional space for the important work of preparing early childhood educators and counselors for their careers.
The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation and the Alice Lee Lund Charitable Trust made leadership gifts of $10 million and $5 million, respectively, to support the new addition. Several other leadership donors also supported the project, including Dan Rovig and Maureen Beasley Rovig and Warren and Betsy Wilcox.
The gifts enabled expansion that’s already having a profound impact on campus and the broader community.
The centerpiece of the addition is the new Alice Lund Instructional Auditorium, a one-of-a-kind classroom and flexible conference space. UM faculty and students as well as community members utilize UM’s largest classroom, equipped with advanced technology, for interactive, immersive learning and engagement.
The Learning and Belonging Preschool – which has helped prepare more than 10,000 teachers since 2009 – gained two classrooms with observation rooms, an additional seminar room and an outdoor play space. The expansion allows the LAB Preschool to prepare even more teachers for their careers, and gives three times as many local families access to high-quality preschool education.
The Counseling Department’s new space provides seven counseling rooms equipped for individual, couples and group counseling. The Department provides counseling sessions to local families while training the next generation of caring professionals.
The addition is also the new home of the Montana Digital Academy, which with a grant from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, brings math assessments and instruction to more than 100,000 learners across Montana.
Private support is still needed to fund this building project. Opportunities to name spaces are available.
With your gift, we will:
- Underwrite a full-time Early Child Program Director
- Support the new spaces with cutting-edge technology to enhance learning and communication
